These have landed in my information stream in the past couple of days (which I’m interpreting as the universe telling me to get off my a**). If you’re needing the same, um, inspiration, I hope they’ll help you as well…
1. “Liberation” by Hugh MacLeod (gapingvoidgallery.com)

It’s so true. Nothing is stopping you, but you. Your perceptions, your beliefs, your thoughts. None of them are reality, they’re just the way you see it at the moment because you haven’t had the experience to teach you otherwise.
2.”What you can learn from a lousy teacher…” by Seth Godin (sethgodin.com)
Seth reminds us that when faced with a “lousy teacher”, we can remember the following:
- Grades are an illusion
- Your passion and insight are reality
- Your work is worth more than mere congruence to an answer key
- Persistence in the face of a skeptical authority figure is a powerful ability
- Fitting in is a short-term strategy, standing out pays off in the long run
- If you care enough about the work to be criticized, you’ve learned enough for today
I wish someone had shared this with me when I was younger and continued to remind me of this as I drifted through high school.
And college.
And law school.
And business school.
Focusing on traditional “success” without really feeling successful. Searching for and often accepting answers that were outside of myself and my experience.
Another way to think about this one is to remember the toughest teachers and classes you had – where you had to struggle and really put yourself into the work if you wanted to succeed.
What do you think? How are you defining success? Are you finding ways to liberate yourself from yourself?
